Who gave you wings?
September 19, 2011“Oh! Did you see that? Mother, everybody is flying, will I ever be able to fly?” baby bird asked his mother with curious eyes when even the younger ones started flying.
“Sure honey, you would. Come here,” she comforted and took the baby under her wings. The time was running out and she knew that baby was growing faster than the strength in his new-sprung wings.
On that far high branch of a tall tree in the rainy forest, baby bird could never attempt to fly. He would get scared and cling to his mother every time he looked down the tree.
She knew it was a time. The baby must fly or he would never be able to fly. Making her heart strong, mother called for her baby. Standing on the edge of the branch, she asked him,”Son, you have to jump.”
“Mother, I can’t I am so scared.”
“You must baby, jump and spread your wings, flip them hard.”
“What if I fall on the ground? Will I die?”
“Not if you spread your wings and fly.” She said and pushed the baby down.
He tumbled down without opening his wings. When he saw the ground he was scared. He had to fly. He spread his wings to its full and flipped them hard. With the unseen determination that he must fly and not fall on the ground, he closed his eyes and kept flipping his wings with all his strength. When he opened his eyes, he was flying high. In ecstasy he called his mother.
“Mother, I can fly. I can fly.”
“Yes dear, you can fly,” his mother was already by his side. They flew high in the sky and celebrated his first flight.
The baby was very excited with his new found ability to fly.
“I thought I will never fly. I was so feared mother.”
“I know my son. Even I was feared. But you know what they say, fear gives wings and fear gave you wings. I pushed you and I will never ever do that again.” And she embraced him and kissed him numerous times.
“No mother. It was not fear. When I was falling down I saw you on the ground with your wings spread to catch me and protect me if I could not fly. That would have hurt you. I had to fly mother for I love you so much. It’s your love that gave me wings mother.”
